The Mustang had been designed with Baby Boomers in mind and became immensely popular. Indeed, it was introduced in April 1964, shortly before the first of the Boomers graduated from high school. Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra and Debbie Reynolds owned one, and in Bullitt (1968) Steve McQueen wheeled a Mustang on a ten-minute car chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco in what was long considered one of the greatest stunt-driving performances.67 The car was glamorous; the work of building it wasn’t.
